There are the children you give birth to,
And then
There are the heartchildren.
Who touch you inexplicably,
Fill a need somehow.
You see it in their eyes
That you are Mom-for-a-moment,
Dad-for-a-day.
Know this:
Your caring is not wasted
Because they are not your own.
In that moment that you reach out
You claim your heartchild,
They are yours
And you never get your heart back.
